Birth & Lineage

Ali was born inside the Kaaba in Mecca around 600 CE, the son of Abu Talib who had raised the Prophet. He grew up in the Prophet’s own household and, as a youth, was the first male to accept Islam.

Life & Virtues

On the night of the Hijra he slept in the Prophet’s bed to protect him. A hero of the battles of Badr, Uhud and Khaybar, he married Fatima al-Zahra. Renowned for justice, knowledge and eloquence, his sermons and letters are gathered in Nahj al-Balagha; the Prophet called him “the gate of the city of knowledge.”

Martyrdom & Legacy

After years of patience he led the Muslim community as caliph from 35 AH. While praying the dawn prayer in the mosque of Kufa in Ramadan of 40 AH, he was struck with a poisoned sword by the Kharijite Ibn Muljam, and was martyred two days later. He is buried in Najaf.
